The Gerard Victory Commission for 2002 has been awarded to young composer Garrett Sholdice from St Andrew's College, Dublin. Presently a final year student at second level, Garett hopes to study composition at third level this autumn. His winning work, Song, uses stanzas from Allen Ginsberg's 1954 poem of the same name in what the composer describes as 'dissonant and rich harmonies as well as unexpected and complex rhythmic ideas'. His commission, to compose a new work for the National Chamber Choir, was awarded at the National Chamber Choir/Bus Éireann Composition Workshops Gala Concert in St Patrick's Hall, Dublin Castle on 26 February. Certificates of Achievement were also awarded to the composers of all the works written during the three-year project who came from ten schools around Ireland. The works are being broadcast on The Lyric Breakfast on RTE Lyric FM at 8.10am on Tuesdays and Thursday during April and May.0p>
