Choir's Anniversary On 28 June 2002 the Irish Youth Choir celebrated its 21st Anniversary in a gala reunion concert of twentieth- and twenty-first century Irish choral music. The concert, in which the IYC performed with the National Symphony Orchestra of Ireland and soloists Andrew Murphy (baritone) and Kieran Murphy (war pipes), was conducted by founding director Geoffrey Spratt and broadcast live from the National Concert Hall by RTE Lyric FM. The uniquely all-Irish programme featured two works by Aloys Fleischmann, Song of the Provinces and Clare's Dragoons. Song of the Provinces was composed in 1967 and tells of the virtues of the provinces of Medieval Ireland as experienced by a travelling English exile. It features a special part for the audience. Clare's Dragoons, composed in the 1940s, is adapted from the ballad by Thomas Davis and concerns the exploits of the Wild Geese after the Battle of Ramilles in 1706. Cork-based composer Séamas de Barra, a lecturer at the Cork School of Music, composed a new work, Ode to a Masque: The Vision of Delight for choir and orchestra. This is an elaborate description of a party (a masque) given by the royal court in sixteenth-century England. Ciarán Tackney, a long-term member of the Irish Youth Choir, also wrote a piece for the concert. Jubilate Deo is his second composition for the Irish Youth Choir. His Gloria was premiered by the choir in 1997 in Wales and Cork. The Irish Youth Choir was founded by conductor Geoffrey Spratt and former administrator Aiveen Kearney in 1982, and since then has performed many of the major choral works in venues throughout Ireland. The choir was delighted to celebrate its anniversary by inviting all past members to participate.
