Horizons 2002

RTÉ Music Horizons 2002 series comprises four concerts of contemporary music presented by the National Symphony Orchestra of Ireland. These feature the works of Irish composers John Buckley (29 January), Ian Wilson (12 March), Gerald Barry (14 May) and Donnacha Dennehy (21 May) performed in conjunction with works by Ligeti, Ruzicka, Xenakis and Cage. Guest artists include Peter Sweeney (organ), Rebecca Hirsch (violin), Robin Thompson-Clarke (cello), Mary Hegarty (soprano) and conductors Andre de Ridder, Rumon Gamba and Colman Pearce.

John Buckley's January concert presented his Concerto for Organ and Orchestra with Peter Sweeney as soloist, and the orchestral work, A mirror in the light. The March concert of Ian Wilson's music includes his second violin concerto, An Angel serves a small breakfast, performed by Rebecca Hirsch, and his cello concerto, Shining Forth, played by Robin Thompson-Clarke (cello), both under conductor André de Ridder. In May, Gerard Barry's Wiener Blut and The Eternal Recurrence for soprano and orchestra (a setting of texts from Nietzsche's Also Sprach Zarathustra) will be conducted by Rumon Gamba; while in the final concert Donnacha Dennehy's Severance and a new orchestral work, 'O', will be directed by Gerhard Markson. All concerts commence at 6.30pm and are preceded by a pre-concert talk at 5.45pm. Admission is free; tickets at the door.
