Canning's Mirrors

Rob Canning
Rob Canning
Music for Galway's 2002 concert season features the premiere of a new work for amplified piano and electronics by Rob Canning. Roomful of Mirrors, to be given its first performance by Finghín Collins in Galway on 22 February, is Music for Galway's second annual commission. This complex electro-acoustic work uses a pre-recorded piano part which has been organised in space and time onto an eight-track tape and diffused through an eight-speaker sound system. The first movement allows the performer a certain degree of freedom in weaving the live piano part with the tape track, but in general the spatial and pitch relationships are predetermined. By contrast, the last movement gives a greater degree of freedom, allowing the performer to improvise over the tape part resulting in complex spatial and rhythmic textures. Canning is also in the process of writing versions for two pianos and for piano and stereo tape.
