Step 1: Download Layar
Layar is a free augmented reality browser for smartphones, created by the Amsterdam-based Layar B.V.
Please note that the CMC's Music Trail 2011 layer requires Layar API Version 3.0 or above.
Click the link corresponding to your device to download Layar:
If you're new to Layar, here's a short intro video that demonstrates how it works. If you already have Layar on your phone, skip to step 2.
Step 2: Open the Layar app
Upon opening the app you'll be asked to create an account in order to use all of the features. This is optional, feel free to skip this step.
A number of tabs will appear on the screen (Yours, Local, Featured, Popular, Search) indicating available layers in the Catalog.
Step 3: Launch the Music Trail 2011 layer
For best results please make sure you are near Dublin City Centre when you launch the layer.
Select the Local tab. If you are near Dublin City Centre, the Music Trail 2011 layer should be dislayed in the results. If it's not there, a search for 'music' on the Search tab should bring it up.
Step 4: Using the Music Trail 2011 layer
Your handset shows you what trail points are nearby by displaying graphical markers on top of the real world as seen through your phone's camera.
Point the phone's camera lens in the direction of the area to be viewed.
Press your phone's menu button. From here, you can:
- Switch between Reality, Map, and List by pressing the corresponding button.
- Adjust the search range by touching the Settings button (cog icon) and adjusting this slider (the range can be set between 100 metres and 10 kilometres.
- Access a map to navigate between locations.
- Add the layer to your Favourites list by touching the Star button.
- Access Layer Actions that allow you to share the layer through Facebook, Twitter, or email.
In the Reality view, the trail points are represented on screen by circular markers.
A blue marker represents a trail point that is within listening distance.
A white marker indicates the currently selected trail point. The white panel displays details of the music at that location.
Tapping on one of the markers allows you to keep the currently displayed trail point in view even if you point the camera lens in a different direction. To release the lock, tap the marker again, or tap another marker on your screen.
Selecting a marker will display details about the composition that is located at the selected point on the trail. Along with this information will be the following buttons:
- Listen - Tapping this will launch Layar's audio player, which will begin to play the selected composition. You need to be in range of the marker (within a 60 metre radius) to listen to the music. On some devices, the music will begin playing automatically when you are first within range of the trail point.
- More Info - Tapping this will allow you to view detailed program notes for the composition you are viewing
- Take Me There - Tapping this will open a map displaying your current location and directions to the composition that you have selected
To stop audio playback, tap the (x) in the top right corner of the display. You can also pause playback by tapping the pause icon in the top left corner.
Troubleshooting
I'm in Dublin City Centre but I can't see any layers in the Local tab / I can't see any trail points in the Music Trail 2011 layer.
Make sure you have 3G and location services switched on.
On the iPhone this setting is under Settings > General > Location Services.
It's hard to select a trail point, the marker keeps moving about when I try to focus on it.
Try switching to the Map or List view to select the desired trail point. You can additionally tap the lock icon and the point will remain selected when you switch back to Reality view.
