Introduction

The Irish Composers Project involves the scanning and digitising of CMC's unique collection of scores and recordings by Irish composers for online access and in ways that enable future music research.

This major project aims to create a state of the art digital collection reflecting the rich musical heritage of composers from Ireland. The project will help performers, promoters and researchers in accessing CMC's collections online, and will enhance the global reach of Irish composers and their work in the digital age.

Initially sample pages from digitised works will be added to CMC's site along with matching audio samples. A number of full colour scans of original manuscripts and sketches will also be made available for a selection of composers. Future stages of the project will see the development of e-commerce facilities for download of the materials along with the creation of a digital archive which will be available to a range of CMC's client groups such as researchers, performers and music programmers.

Once completed, the project will provide online public access through an enhanced web site to more than 5,500 music scores and 3,000 sound recordings. It will also ensure the preservation in digital form of this unique cultural resource, thereby enabling future research and performance of Irish composers' music by generations of performers and researchers to come.

Partners

The Irish Composers Project has been undertaken in partnership with the Music Departments of St Patrick's College, Drumcondra (SPD), Dundalk Institute of Technology (DKIT), and NUI Maynooth (NUIM), within the framework of An Foras Feasa (AFF), the Institute for Research in Irish Historical and Cultural Traditions.

The project is funded through An Foras Feasa and the research committees of SPD and DKIT. It has also received funding from the Arts Council/An Chomhairle Ealaíon, and the Arts Council of Northern Ireland.

As well as funding support, CMC has worked closely with its registered composers in sourcing materials and helping to make them available for digitising. The project has also received support from a number of publishers and record companies, as well as broadcasters such as RTÉ.

CMC gratefully acknowledges all this support and input, without which the project would not have been possible.
