David Flynn is a composer and musician from Dublin. His work encompasses most musical genres including classical, jazz, rock and traditional Irish music. Initially self-taught, he began formal studies at the Dublin Institute of Technology Conservatory of Music and Drama in 1999, studying guitar with John Feeley. In 2004 he obtained an MMus in composition with Malcolm Singer at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. He is currently pursuing a Research Doctorate through the DIT Conservatory of Music.

He has won a number of awards as a composer, including the 2004 Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival Composers Competition and the 2002 IMRO Award. He has also received bursaries from the Arts Council / An Chomhairle Ealaíon, IMRO, the Bliss Trust, the Guildhall Trust and the Michael Collins Memorial Foundation.

David Flynn’s music has been performed at major festivals including Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival, the Masters of Tradition Festival, the City of London Festival, the European Broadcasting Union Folk Festival, the Guitar Festival of Ireland and the Mostly Modern Festival, with performances by internationally renowned artists including fiddle player Martin Hayes and guitarist Dennis Cahill, violinist Ioana Petcu-Colan, pianist Rolf Hind, the Smith Quartet, the ConTempo Quartet and the Dublin Guitar Quartet.

He has received commissions from West Cork Music, Temple Bar Cultural Trust, Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival, RTÉ lyric fm, Music for Galway and the Contemporary Music Centre. He was recently commissioned by RTÉ to compose a concerto for Martin Hayes and released his debut album of Irish traditional music ‘Draíocht’ in 2007. His guitar pieces ‘Four Études for Five Fingers’ are to be published by Mel Bay Publications in 2008.
